I'd like to toy around with the sources just for shit and giggles to see if I can grok what it is doing. I have no hw to run it on (doesn't go in a C-1?).

What sw do I need if I want to try a build? Is there any walkthrough for someone not even knowledgeable enough to be dangerous?

BonusQ: Didn't I read about an AGA implementation in the works? Any status or pointers for that?

You will need a "Compiler" or "Synthesizer" software to build an FPGA binary.
Depending on what hardware you (want to) use, the both Xilinx or Atera software is necessary.

The Xilinx ISE WebPack (current version 14.2 Im using 13.4) is freely to use for Windows and Linux.
The Altera Quartus (version unknown) is freely for Windows but will cost some bucks for Linux.

In both case you only need this to synthesize a binary file for the used FPGA chip.
If you don't have such thing, the synthesizer will be useless. It would be enough to read and edit the .v files. Without FPGA hardware you can only run simulation of the core function.

The FPGA Replay board apparently has a robust AGA implementation - but source for that hasn't (as far as I'm aware) been released yet.

I've taken some baby steps in the direction of AGA functionality myself, using an Altera DE1 board - details here: http://retroramblings.net/?p=127

But it will complain about syntax and missing declarations and anything else it can't find or think you have done wrong?

Yes the software will do this and in most case offer a helpful error report.
